Dripstone Caves

The Dripstone Caves biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as an underground biome. Its climate is mild and temperate, so the Dripstone Caves gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.5 and the biome ID minecraft:dripstone_caves.

Its defining terrain features are pointed dripstone stalactites and stalagmites, dripstone clusters and water pools. Features pointed dripstone formations. Stalactites can drip water to fill cauldrons. Pointed dripstone deals extra fall damage. Large ore veins can generate here.

The Dripstone Caves biome was added to Minecraft in 1.18 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Dripstone Caves you find will shift from world to world.

The Dripstone Caves biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Lush Caves and underground cave systems, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

It generates underground anywhere; you will recognise it by the forests of pointed dripstone stalactites and stalagmites.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:dripstone_caves”, which points you to the nearest Dripstone Caves and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Dripstone Caves on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

The hostile life of the Dripstone Caves biome is led by Drowned, Zombie, Skeleton, Spider and Creeper. The Drowned is an underwater zombie that can wield a trident and drops nautilus shells, while the Zombie burns in daylight and bangs on doors to reach players at night.

The blocks that give the Dripstone Caves biome its character include Pointed Dripstone and Dripstone Block. Within the Dripstone Caves, Pointed Dripstone and Dripstone Block are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

In terms of mining, large ore blobs, especially copper and iron, generate more often in dripstone caves.

No generated structures are tied to the Dripstone Caves biome, so exploring it rewards you with its pointed dripstone stalactites and stalagmites and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the Dripstone Caves.
