Overworld

Plains

One of the most common biomes. Villages spawn frequently here. Excellent for early-game building due to flat terrain.

Sunflower Plains

The only biome where sunflowers naturally generate. Sunflowers always face east, making them a natural compass.

Forest

One of the most common biomes. Great source of wood early game. Both oak and birch trees generate here.

Flower Forest

Contains nearly every flower type in the game. The best biome for collecting dye materials. Rabbits spawn here instead of wolves.

Birch Forest

Exclusively birch trees. Provides a consistent and aesthetic wood source. Fairly common biome.

Old Growth Birch Forest

Features extra-tall birch trees that can grow much higher than normal birch trees. Previously called Tall Birch Forest.

Dark Forest

The only biome where Woodland Mansions generate. The thick canopy creates low light levels, allowing hostile mobs to spawn during the day.

Taiga

Spruce-dominated biome with foxes and sweet berry bushes. Taiga villages use spruce wood architecture.

Old Growth Pine Taiga

Features massive 2x2 spruce trees and podzol ground cover. Mossy cobblestone boulders dot the landscape. Previously called Giant Tree Taiga.

Old Growth Spruce Taiga

Similar to Old Growth Pine Taiga but with denser leaf coverage on the giant spruce trees. Previously called Giant Spruce Taiga.

Meadow

A high-altitude grassy biome found on mountain slopes. Lone trees here always have a bee nest. Part of the mountain biome family.

Cherry Grove

A beautiful biome featuring pink cherry blossom trees. Generates on mountain hillsides. Cherry wood has a unique pink color. Added in the Trails & Tales update.

Swamp

Slimes can spawn on the surface at night. Swamp Huts house witches and black cats. Blue orchids are exclusive to swamps.

Mangrove Swamp

Features unique mangrove trees with exposed root systems. Mud blocks generate naturally here. Warm frogs spawn in this biome.

River

Rivers cut through the landscape connecting biomes. Good source of clay and sand. Drowned can spawn in rivers at night.

Frozen River

Frozen variant of the river biome. Water surface generates as ice. Strays can spawn here instead of regular skeletons.

Snowy Plains

A vast snowy flatland. Snow villages and igloos generate here. Some igloos have hidden basements with brewing stands.

Ice Spikes

Features dramatic packed ice spikes towering up to 50 blocks. Packed ice does not melt and is useful for fast travel ice roads.

Snowy Taiga

A cold spruce forest covered in snow. Igloos can generate here. White-coat foxes spawn instead of the orange variant.

Snowy Beach

Generates where cold biomes meet the ocean. The shore is covered in snow. Water at the edge may freeze.

Frozen Ocean

Ocean surface is frozen with large icebergs containing blue ice. Blue ice is the fastest block for ice boat travel. Polar bears spawn on icebergs.

Frozen Peaks

Smooth, rounded mountain peaks covered in snow and packed ice. Goats can spawn here. Part of the 1.18 mountain generation overhaul.

Jagged Peaks

Dramatic jagged mountain peaks reaching extreme heights. Goats spawn here and can knock entities off cliffs. The most dramatic mountain biome.

Grove

A snowy forest found on mountain slopes. Contains natural powder snow traps that can catch unsuspecting players. Leather boots prevent sinking.

Stony Peaks

Mountain peaks that generate in warmer regions. Features exposed stone instead of snow. Calcite bands can be found here.

Snowy Slopes

Steep mountainsides covered in snow with hidden powder snow patches. Igloos can generate on snowy slopes. Watch out for powder snow traps.

Desert

It never rains in deserts. Desert temples contain trapped chests with TNT. Husks replace zombies. Sugar cane can generate near water.

Savanna

Flat terrain with acacia trees. It never rains here. Llamas and horses spawn naturally. Savanna villages use acacia wood.

Savanna Plateau

An elevated version of the savanna with flat tops and steep cliff edges. Generates at higher altitudes. Same mobs and structures as regular savanna.

Windswept Savanna

The most extreme terrain in the game. Features massive overhangs, floating islands, and dramatic cliffs. Previously called Shattered Savanna.

Badlands

Also known as Mesa. Gold ore generates at any height here. Surface-level mineshafts with dark oak supports are exclusive to this biome. Features colorful terracotta layers.

Eroded Badlands

One of the rarest biomes. Features dramatic terracotta hoodoo pillars and spires. Great landscape for screenshots and builds.

Wooded Badlands

Badlands variant with oak trees growing on the plateaus. Coarse dirt replaces grass in some areas. Previously called Wooded Badlands Plateau.

Jungle

Dense tropical biome with massive 2x2 jungle trees. Parrots, ocelots, and pandas spawn here. Jungle temples contain redstone puzzle traps.

Bamboo Jungle

The primary source of bamboo. Pandas have a higher spawn rate here. Podzol covers the ground. Bamboo can be used for scaffolding and as fuel.

Sparse Jungle

A sparser version of the jungle with smaller trees and less undergrowth. Previously called Jungle Edge. Acts as a transition biome.

Ocean

Standard ocean biome with moderate depth. Contains kelp forests and seagrass. Dolphins can lead players to treasure.

Deep Ocean

Much deeper than regular oceans. Ocean Monuments with Elder Guardians generate exclusively in deep ocean variants. Guardians patrol around monuments.

Warm Ocean

The only ocean biome with coral reefs. Tropical fish in many colorful variants swim here. Sea pickles provide underwater light. Coral dies if placed outside water.

Lukewarm Ocean

Transition ocean between warm and normal. Sand floor but no coral reefs. Both tropical fish and cod can be found here.

Cold Ocean

Cold ocean variant with darker, bluer water. Salmon spawn here alongside cod. Gravel forms the ocean floor.

Deep Lukewarm Ocean

Deep variant of the lukewarm ocean. Ocean Monuments can generate here. Shares the warmer water color of the lukewarm ocean.

Deep Cold Ocean

Deep variant of the cold ocean. Ocean Monuments can generate here. Darker water color than the lukewarm variant.

Deep Frozen Ocean

Deep variant of the frozen ocean. Features large icebergs and blue ice. Ocean Monuments can generate beneath the ice. Polar bears spawn on icebergs.

Lush Caves

A beautiful underground biome. Axolotls spawn exclusively here. Azalea trees on the surface indicate lush caves below. Glow berries provide natural light.

Dripstone Caves

Features pointed dripstone formations. Stalactites can drip water to fill cauldrons. Pointed dripstone deals extra fall damage. Large ore veins can generate here.

Deep Dark

The most dangerous underground biome. Home to the Warden, which is attracted by vibrations and can deal massive damage. Ancient Cities contain unique loot including echo shards and disc fragments.

Pale Garden

A pale, eerie biome featuring ghostly pale oak trees and hanging moss. The Creaking mob spawns here, animated by Creaking Heart blocks hidden in trees. Part of the Pale Garden update.

Beach

Generates where land biomes meet the ocean. Turtles lay eggs on beaches. Buried treasure chests can be found using treasure maps from shipwrecks.

Stony Shore

Rocky coastal biome where mountains meet the ocean. Features steep cliff faces. No passive mobs naturally spawn here.

Mushroom Fields

One of the rarest biomes. Hostile mobs cannot naturally spawn here, making it the safest biome. Mooshrooms are exclusive to this biome. Mycelium replaces grass.

Windswept Hills

Previously called Extreme Hills. Emerald ore generates naturally here. Llamas and goats can spawn. Infested stone blocks contain silverfish.

Windswept Gravelly Hills

A variant of windswept hills with gravel replacing much of the surface. Previously called Gravelly Mountains. Can be treacherous due to gravel slides.

Forested variant of windswept hills. Combines dramatic elevation with dense tree coverage. Previously called Wooded Mountains.
