Mangrove Swamp

Mangroves standing on their own roots over shallow water, with mud where the ground should be. The roots, the propagules, the muddy roots and the mud itself all come out of this biome, and mangrove wood with them.

Frogs raised here grow up white, tropical fish swim between the roots and bees work the canopy. Slimes come out in the open at night, which happens in only one other biome, fire struggles to spread through the damp, and a map drawn over it comes out looking like open water.

Temperature 0.8 with 0.9 humidity makes it a warm, wet climate: rainfall, never snow. It is uncommon, minecraft:mangrove_swamp arrived in 1.19 with the frogs, and 1.21 has kept it that way.

It needs heat and standing water together, which are both Overworld conditions. Swamp, Jungle and Beach border it, so a warm coast or a river mouth is where to begin.

It generates in hot, humid regions; look for thickets of mangrove trees standing on tangled stilt roots over mud.

Uncommon, and slow to cross rather than hard to reach: mud pulls you down and the roots stop a boat. Frogs live in it, and a mangrove propagule is the only way to grow one of these trees anywhere else. Being warm and wet is the whole requirement, so no portal is needed and no long travel either: following a coast far enough south will do it, and the oak of an ordinary swamp soon turns to mangrove. Those trees are the signposts, and the ground underfoot will reveal the change often before the canopy does.

Frogs own this water. They fill the animal slot outright, two to five at a time, and the ones that grow up here come out white, which happens in only a handful of biomes. A frog eats small slimes and magma cubes whole, and the variant it becomes is decided by where it grew rather than by what it ate.

Tropical fish share the shallows in shoals of eight, in the thousands of colour patterns that make them worth bucketing for an aquarium. Bees work the mangrove above them, pollinating, filling nests with honey and stinging only when provoked. Nothing on this list will start a fight with you first. Counted per spawn attempt the frog is all of the animals, two to five at a time. On the peaceful side that is the whole list: a bee, for example, pollinates the flowers, fills nests with honey and stings only when provoked, and the cold, temperate or warm variant a frog grows into is set by the biome it grew up in. Frogs arrive 2 to 5 at a time, with nothing behind them.

The first thing to gather is Mangrove Log, and the tree gives you four blocks nothing else does: Mangrove Roots and Muddy Mangrove Roots from the tangle at the base, Mangrove Leaves overhead, and Mangrove Propagule hanging under them, which is the sapling and a green dye in one.

Mud is the floor, and it is worth carrying: a mud block under a dripstone drips into clay, so this biome is a clay farm that never runs out. Bone Block and Lily Pad both grow in only a couple of biomes, and both turn up here.

Patches of ordinary grass are laid along the waterline as their own step, which is why a mangrove swamp has green banks instead of mud all the way to the edge, and people come for wood from its trees and leave with a full inventory of roots.

Fire burns itself out faster here than elsewhere, which is the only mercy in a biome built out of wood standing in water.

The mud plays by rules of its own: step on it and you sink to your ankles, and a boat crosses it faster than your feet do.

Mangrove Propagule, Mangrove Roots and Muddy Mangrove Roots all come off the same mangrove, which is why one tree fills so many slots.

Few biomes give you a tree and a clay supply on one walk, and few of them make the wood this awkward to cut.

Mangrove swamp is the swamp without the hut. Nothing is tied to it, so the roots, the mud and the dense trees standing in warm shallow water are what the exploring rewards, and there is nothing built to loot.

Below the mud the world stops caring about biome edges: mineshaft tunnels through the stone, dungeon rooms in their own pockets, and rarely a stronghold. None of that belongs to the biome, it simply happens to be under it. Nothing generated stands above the mud, so scenery is what exploring rewards and buildings are not, while dungeons and mineshafts are dug beneath it by placement that ignores biome boundaries. That generation adds an occasional stronghold as well, and you will still find such things rather deeper than the roots go.

Mangrove trees get 25 tries per chunk, which is ten times what an ordinary swamp gets from its own tree pass. Water lilies come in patches of 4 and 10, seagrass at 64, and a grass disk is placed once per chunk, which happens in this biome and nowhere else. Fossils sit under one chunk in 64. Forty five passes altogether.

The mangrove swamp is on the warm frog list, so a tadpole raised in this water grows into the warm variant and not the temperate one its neighbour the swamp produces.

It is on the warm list for farm animals as well, though the only things that spawn here on their own are frogs, tropical fish and bees. Surface slimes are allowed here too, and the biome draws its water on a map outline.

No hut in the mangroves, but the swamp version of the ruined portal generates here as it does in the ordinary swamp, which is the pair that makes those two biomes structural cousins.

Underneath, mineshafts run through the mud and stone and the chambers keep their -40 to -20 band with every spawn category emptied inside.
