Slimes can spawn on the surface at night. Swamp Huts house witches and black cats. Blue orchids are exclusive to swamps.

Overview

The Swamp biome is a common biome you will run into often, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a temperate biome. Its climate is warm and humid, so the Swamp gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.8 and the biome ID minecraft:swamp.

Its defining terrain features are shallow water, oak trees with vines, lily pads, clay deposits and seagrass. Slimes can spawn on the surface at night. Swamp Huts house witches and black cats. Blue orchids are exclusive to swamps.

The Swamp biome was added to Minecraft in Beta 1.8 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Swamp you find will shift from world to world.

Where to find it

The Swamp biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders River, Mangrove Swamp, Plains and Jungle, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

Look for flat, murky shallow water dotted with lily pads and vine-draped oak trees at low elevation.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:swamp”, which points you to the nearest Swamp and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Swamp on foot: because it is common, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

Mobs

On the peaceful side, the Swamp biome is home to Frog. The Frog, for example, eats small slimes and magma cubes, with a cold, temperate or warm variant set by the biome it grows up in.

On the dangerous side of the Swamp biome, watch for Slime and Bogged. The Slime splits into smaller copies when killed and drops slimeballs for sticky pistons and leads, while the Bogged is a mossy skeleton variant that fires poison-tipped arrows.

Blocks & resources

The blocks that give the Swamp biome its character include Lily Pad, Vine, Blue Orchid, Clay and Mud. Within the Swamp, Lily Pad, Vine, Blue Orchid and Clay are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

In terms of mining, clay is plentiful in the shallow water bed.

Players typically visit the Swamp biome to collect wood from its trees, flowers for dyes and clay for bricks and terracotta, which makes it a worthwhile stop for stocking up on several resources at once.

Structures & features

The Swamp biome can generate a Swamp Hut (witch hut) inhabited by a witch and a black cat.

Finding the Swamp Hut is one of the main reasons to seek out the Swamp biome.
