One of the most common biomes. Villages spawn frequently here. Excellent for early-game building due to flat terrain.
A beautiful biome featuring pink cherry blossom trees. Generates on mountain hillsides. Cherry wood has a unique pink color. Added in the Trails & Tales update.
The most dangerous underground biome. Home to the Warden, which is attracted by vibrations and can deal massive damage. Ancient Cities contain unique loot including echo shards and disc fragments.
A beautiful underground biome. Axolotls spawn exclusively here. Azalea trees on the surface indicate lush caves below. Glow berries provide natural light.
A red-themed fungal forest. Hoglins are the only hostile mob that drops food in the Nether. Piglins can be bartered with for various items. Shroomlights provide excellent light.
Also known as Mesa. Gold ore generates at any height here. Surface-level mineshafts with dark oak supports are exclusive to this biome. Features colorful terracotta layers.
One of the rarest biomes. Hostile mobs cannot naturally spawn here, making it the safest biome. Mooshrooms are exclusive to this biome. Mycelium replaces grass.
The central End island where the Ender Dragon boss fight takes place. Features obsidian pillars with end crystals. After defeating the dragon, End Gateways appear leading to the outer End.
How many biomes are in Minecraft
This site describes 64 biomes: 54 in the Overworld, 5 in the Nether and 5 in The End. The game data for Java Edition 26.2 holds 66 of them. The two without a page here are The Void, which is the empty space outside a built world and has no mobs at all, and Sulfur Caves, a cave biome at temperature 0.8 that grows sulfur, potent sulfur and sulfur spikes and is the only place the sulfur cube spawns. Of the 64, 29 are common, 25 uncommon, 8 rare and 2 very rare.
They split into eight groups by climate and place: 15 temperate, 11 warm, 9 cold, 9 ocean, 6 beach and special, 4 underground, and the 5 Nether and 5 End biomes that are dimensions of their own. Rain falls in 36 of them, snow in 11, and 17 stay dry, which includes every biome in the Nether and The End.
What decides which biome you are in
Temperature decides more than the weather. It runs from -0.7 in Frozen Peaks and Jagged Peaks up to 2 in the deserts, savannas, badlands and all five Nether biomes. Below 0.15 water freezes and snow falls instead of rain, which is the case in 10 biomes; above it everything stays liquid. That single number also decides the colour of grass and leaves, so two forests with the same blocks can look nothing alike.
The second thing that matters is what generates in it. Twenty structures are spread over the 64, and 27 biomes have none of their own at all. Villages, for example, generate in exactly 6: Plains, Taiga, Meadow, Snowy Plains, Desert and Savanna. That is worth knowing before you walk for an hour in the wrong direction.
Which biome to start in
For a first night, go by what spawns and what stands there. Plains, Taiga, Meadow, Snowy Plains, Desert and Savanna are the six with villages, and Savanna Plateau has the longest animal list of any biome with eight. Six biomes have no animals of their own at all, among them all three badlands and Stony Peaks, so they are quiet but empty. The 10 rare and very rare biomes are worth a trip rather than a home: Mushroom Fields and Eroded Badlands are the two very rare ones.
The extremes of the 64 biomes
| Coldest, at temperature -0.7 | Frozen Peaks and Jagged Peaks |
|---|---|
| Warmest, at temperature 2 | Desert, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, Badlands, Eroded Badlands, Wooded Badlands, Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, Warped Forest and Basalt Deltas |
| Most mobs, 8 of them | Savanna Plateau |
| Longest in the game, since Alpha 1.2.0 | Plains |
| Newest, added in 1.21.4 | Pale Garden |
| Rarest, counted as very rare | Eroded Badlands and Mushroom Fields |
These are the extremes of the 64. Every figure comes from the same data as the pages themselves, so a change in the game moves this table with it.
What is on every biome page
Each of the 64 pages carries the same fields, so you can compare them: temperature and precipitation, the mobs that spawn there with their share of the draw, the structures with the depth they reach, the blocks the biome is made of, its four colours, the version it was added in, an isometric cutaway of one chunk, and a FAQ written from that biome's own numbers. Across all 64 that comes to 49 different mobs, 20 structures and 143 named blocks.
