Nether Wastes

The original and most common Nether biome. Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants generate here. Nether quartz and gold ore are abundant.
Overview of Nether Wastes
The Nether you picture when someone says Nether: netherrack from wall to wall, lava seas, glowstone hanging off the ceiling, and quartz and gold ore in the rock.
Nether fortresses cross it, which is where blaze rods and wither skeletons come from, and bastion remnants sit in it with piglin loot inside. Zombified piglins wander in numbers, ghasts drift overhead, magma cubes bounce along the floor, and endermen, piglins and striders make up the rest. Bring gold armour before you meet a piglin.
Temperature 2 with zero humidity: the climate here is uniformly scorching and permanently without weather, lit by a lava gloom instead of a sun, and water placed on netherrack evaporates instantly. minecraft:nether_wastes is the common ground of the dimension, has been there since Alpha 1.2.0, and 26.2 still burns it.
Where to find Nether Wastes
Light a portal and this is usually what you step into. Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley and Basalt Deltas all border it on the far side.
It is the default Nether terrain, reached through any Nether portal; expect endless netherrack and lava.
Common to the point of being the default, since most portals open in one. Netherrack and lava run further than you can walk, so mark the way back before you leave the frame, and stay out of ghast range. Building and lighting a portal is the whole of it, which means no long travel on the other side: the wastes reveal themselves the moment you step out, often before your eyes adjust. Ordinary netherrack makes poor signposts, so count your turns soon after you step through rather than following a wall.
Mobs in Nether Wastes
Six mobs share the wastes and the split is lopsided. Zombified piglins take 60 percent of a monster spawn attempt arriving four together, ghasts 30 percent, piglins 9 percent, magma cubes about 1 percent and endermen about half of that. Striders fill the animal slot on their own, one or two at a time.
The zombified piglins ignore you until one is struck, and then the whole pack comes at once, which is the single most common way a first Nether trip ends. A ghast floats overhead and launches explosive fireballs that can be hit back at it. A piglin barters golden items for random goods but turns hostile if you open a chest or mine gold where it can see you. A magma cube bounces at you and splits into smaller cubes that drop magma cream. Endermen teleport, carry blocks around and only turn on you if you look straight at the head.
The strider is the useful one: it walks on lava, and with a saddle and a warped fungus on a stick it will carry you across a lava sea instead of around it. Harmless company here: striders. The strider, for example, walks on lava and can be saddled and steered with a warped fungus on a stick. Watch the rest: the zombified piglin ignores players until one is struck, then the whole pack swarms, while the enderman teleports, picks up blocks and turns hostile if you look directly at its head. Counted per attempt, behind the zombified piglin sit piglin 1 in 11 and magma cube 1 in 83.
Nether Wastes blocks & resources
Start with Netherrack, because everything else is embedded in it: Nether Quartz Ore and Nether Gold Ore in the walls, Glowstone hanging off the ceilings over the lava, Soul Sand in the low ground and Gravel in patches you can mine with a shovel.
Nether quartz ore and nether gold ore are abundant here, and they are worth different things: quartz is a building material you cannot get in the Overworld at all, gold is nuggets that a piglin will trade back to you. Ancient debris hides in the deep layers, well below where either of those two sit.
This is the Nether without a theme, which is exactly why it is the one to tunnel through: no ash, no fungus, no soul sand slowing every step, and a sound of its own that tells you which biome you are standing in without looking up.
In terms of the rules this dimension plays by, the wastes are the plain version: few surprises, nothing built on the surface, and an ambient sound that belongs to this biome and no other.
Nether Quartz Ore and Nether Gold Ore are the two ore blocks the nether wastes give up without a structure, and both sit in plain netherrack.
Glowstone on those ceilings is the one block worth risking the fall for.
Structures & features in Nether Wastes
The wastes are where both nether builds are most likely to be standing. A nether fortress is the one you need rather than want: it is the only place blazes spawn, and the nether wart growing in its staircases is where every brewing stand recipe begins. Five biomes in this list can produce one.
A bastion remnant is the other, reaching four biomes in the Nether here. It is a ruined piglin stronghold packed with gold blocks and the piglins guarding them, and somewhere inside sits Pigstep, a music disc that is rare enough to generate in no other chest.
Between the two, the netherrack, the lava seas and the glowstone clusters are the scenery you cross to reach them. Nether quartz ore and nether gold ore make the walk pay for itself. Each offers its own loot and challenges, and the fortress reaches five biomes while the bastion reaches four, so exploring the wastes usually turns one of the two up. Fortress and bastion are able to appear as neighbours, and these two are thoroughly well defended.
Nether Wastes biome colours
The fog is #330808, a dark red that only this biome uses, and it is what makes the wastes feel closed in when the terrain is actually open. A loop runs continuously, a mood sound comes every five minutes when you are enclosed, and the music is its own. No particles drift here, unlike the other three Nether forests, and 21 carvers cut the rock instead of three.

Nether Wastes: what generates per chunk
Eighteen passes, the standard Nether list and nothing more: quartz at 16 tries per chunk, gold at 10, magma at 4, blackstone and gravel at 2 each, glowstone twice over. Both mushrooms come on one chunk in two, which is the highest mushroom rate anywhere. Nothing here is unique to the wastes, and that is exactly what makes it the default.
Nether Wastes: spawn rules and variants
The Nether counts as warm ground for the animal lists, and the wastes are no exception, but no cow, pig, chicken or frog will ever spawn here to prove it.
Zombified piglins, piglins, striders and endermen are the real population, and none of them has a biome variant.
Nether Wastes: structure depths and spawns
A bastion remnant starts at exactly thirty three blocks above zero here, which is why they so often hang over the lava sea rather than sitting on the netherrack.
A fortress can cross the same ground, and inside its walls the game runs its own spawn list: blazes, wither skeletons, ordinary skeletons, magma cubes and zombified piglins, whatever the biome around it would otherwise do.

Which biomes border Nether Wastes
Step out of Nether Wastes and the reading changes by up to 0, from 2 to 2.
- Crimson Forest: no change in temperature at 2, Hoglin comes in, Ghast, Magma Cube and Enderman stay behind.
- Warped Forest: no change in temperature at 2, Zombified Piglin, Ghast and Magma Cube stay behind.
- Soul Sand Valley: no change in temperature at 2, Skeleton turns up, no more Zombified Piglin, Magma Cube and Piglin.
- Basalt Deltas: no change in temperature at 2, Zombified Piglin, Enderman and Piglin stay behind.
What the mobs in Nether Wastes drop
Everything that spawns in Nether Wastes is worth something. Between them the mobs here drop 9 different things: string, gold ingots, gold nuggets, rotten flesh, ghast tears, gunpowder, music discs, magma cream and ender pearls.
100 percent of the animal draw in Nether Wastes goes to Strider, so string is what this biome hands out most.
What Nether Wastes is good for
The nether wastes are the working floor of the nether: nether quartz ore for redstone comparators and observers, nether gold ore for gold that needs no overworld mine, glowstone in clusters on the ceiling, and soul sand for the wither and for bubble columns.
Both nether structures generate here. A nether fortress is the only place blaze rods come from, and a bastion remnant holds the gold blocks and the netherite that make a piglin trade worth the risk. Zombified piglins, ghasts, magma cubes, endermen, piglins and striders all spawn in the wastes, the longest mob list of any nether biome.
How to find Nether Wastes
Netherrack, lava seas and glowstone fill most of the dimension, with fortresses and bastion remnants in them, so use the /locate biome call from inside the Nether, where the fortresses and bastion remnants are:
The Nether is no exception: that command requires cheats to be enabled on the world whose Nether holds those fortresses, or operator permissions on a server, while lava counts for more than distance out here.
Nether Wastes on Java Edition against Nether Wastes on Bedrock
The nether wastes are simply hell on Bedrock, the oldest surviving id in the game, and the one Java used internally long before it printed Nether Wastes on screen in 1.16.
Temperature 2 and downfall 0 are shared, and Bedrock gives the lava sea a water tint of #905957, the same brown red it uses across all five nether biomes.

Nether Wastes name and version history
Nether Wastes is older than its own name. The biome has been in the game since Alpha 1.2.0, but it only started being called Nether Wastes in 1.16, and it has carried that name in the 39 releases since.

Nether Wastes: which advancements count
Nether Wastes is one of the 5 biomes Hot Tourist Destinations asks for, an advancement that reads "Explore all Nether biomes". All 5 have to be visited, Nether Wastes among them, before it fires. Adventuring Time, the overworld equivalent, does not count Nether Wastes at all.
