River

Rivers cut through the landscape connecting biomes. Good source of clay and sand. Drowned can spawn in rivers at night.
Overview
The River biome is a common biome you will run into often, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a temperate biome. Its climate is mild and temperate, so the River gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.5 and the biome ID minecraft:river.
Its defining terrain features are narrow water channel, clay deposits, sand banks and sugar cane. Rivers cut through the landscape connecting biomes. Good source of clay and sand. Drowned can spawn in rivers at night.
The River biome was added to Minecraft in Beta 1.8 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any River you find will shift from world to world.
Where to find it
The River biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Plains, Forest, Swamp and Beach, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.
Rivers thread between almost every biome, so follow any flowing channel of water across the map.
If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:river”, which points you to the nearest River and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the River on foot: because it is common, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.
Mobs
On the peaceful side, the River biome is home to Squid and Salmon. The Squid, for example, drops ink sacs used for black dye and books-and-quill. Together they make the River a useful place to gather fish and other aquatic resources.
On the dangerous side of the River biome, watch for Drowned. The Drowned is an underwater zombie that can wield a trident and drops nautilus shells.
Blocks & resources
The blocks that give the River biome its character include Sand, Clay, Gravel and Sugar Cane. Within the River, Sand, Clay, Gravel and Sugar Cane are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.
In terms of mining, clay and sand line the river bed in quantity.
Players typically visit the River biome to collect sugar cane for paper and books and clay for bricks and terracotta, which makes it a worthwhile stop for stocking up on several resources at once.
Structures & features
No generated structures are tied to the River biome, so exploring it rewards you with its narrow water channel and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the River.
