Deep Frozen Ocean

The Deep Frozen Ocean biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as an ocean biome. Its climate is mild and temperate, so the Deep Frozen Ocean gets snowfall rather than rain. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.5 and the biome ID minecraft:deep_frozen_ocean.

Its defining terrain features are deep water under ice, icebergs, blue ice and frozen surface patches. Deep variant of the frozen ocean. Features large icebergs and blue ice. Ocean Monuments can generate beneath the ice. Polar bears spawn on icebergs.

The Deep Frozen Ocean biome was added to Minecraft in 1.13 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Deep Frozen Ocean you find will shift from world to world.

The Deep Frozen Ocean biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Frozen Ocean and Deep Cold Ocean, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

It is the deepest frozen water, with icebergs above and an ocean monument sometimes lurking beneath the ice.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:deep_frozen_ocean”, which points you to the nearest Deep Frozen Ocean and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Deep Frozen Ocean on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

On the peaceful side, the Deep Frozen Ocean biome is home to Squid and Salmon. The Squid, for example, drops ink sacs used for black dye and books-and-quill. Together they make the Deep Frozen Ocean a useful place to gather fish and other aquatic resources.

On the dangerous side of the Deep Frozen Ocean biome, watch for Polar Bear, Drowned, Guardian and Stray. The Polar Bear is passive but defends its cubs aggressively if you stray too close, while the Drowned is an underwater zombie that can wield a trident and drops nautilus shells.

The blocks that give the Deep Frozen Ocean biome its character include Ice, Packed Ice, Blue Ice and Gravel. Within the Deep Frozen Ocean, Ice, Packed Ice, Blue Ice and Gravel are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

The Deep Frozen Ocean biome can generate an Ocean Monument, a prismarine temple guarded by Elder Guardians and concealing hidden gold blocks, Ocean Ruins, sunken stone structures with buried-treasure maps and loot chests and a Shipwreck, a sunken vessel whose chests can hold treasure maps, supplies and emeralds.

With Ocean Monument, Ocean Ruins and Shipwreck all able to appear in the Deep Frozen Ocean biome, it is well worth exploring thoroughly, as each of these 3 structures offers its own loot and challenges.
