Frozen Peaks

The smooth kind of mountain top. Frozen peaks round off in snow blocks and packed ice instead of breaking into spikes, and ice formations catch the light near the summit.

Goats are the only thing that spawns up here, and they will ram anything standing near an edge. Pillager outposts are built on the shoulders. Fire burns itself out faster at this height than it does below, so a campfire is less of a risk than the drop is.

Minus 0.7 is a freezing climate, about as cold as the Overworld gets, with 0.9 humidity and snowfall instead of rain, because rainfall stops well below this height. minecraft:frozen_peaks is uncommon, came out of the 1.18 mountain overhaul, and 1.21 caps the tallest mountains with it.

It caps Overworld mountains, so the route to it runs upward. Jagged Peaks, Snowy Slopes and Grove are what you climb through on the way.

Uncommon, and altitude does the filtering for you: if a mountain is tall enough, its top is either this or jagged peaks. Goats will knock you off the packed ice, so climb with a block in hand. Walking uphill in any direction usually finds one, because nowhere lower keeps its ice: those three neighbours are what commonly sit below it, so a goat close by means you hunt no further.

One animal is listed for this whole biome, and it is the goat. Goats fill the slot outright, one to three at a time, which means that if anything is moving up here it is a goat.

That is less peaceful than it sounds. A goat rams anything standing near a ledge off it, which at this altitude is the entire biome, and when it charges into a block it drops a goat horn instead. Nothing else spawns naturally on the smooth snow, so the only other thing you will meet is what climbed up from the biome below. Per spawn attempt the goat is all of the animals, and it rams entities off ledges for as long as there are ledges to use.

Snow Block, Packed Ice, Ice and Stone. The peaks are packed ice under a snow cap rather than snow all the way down, so the higher you climb the more of the hard ice you get, and Stone shows through wherever the slope is too steep to hold either.

Fire burns itself out faster up here than it does elsewhere, which matters more than it sounds: a campfire on a frozen peak stays a campfire.

The small print is the climb: the ice gives no grip at all, so a water bucket or a ladder is what saves the fall.

The only build this high is a pillager outpost, and twelve biomes on these pages can hold that tower. A watchtower goes up on the smooth snow with pillagers holding the ground below it and a captain somewhere in the structure, whose banner leaves you carrying the Bad Omen effect the moment he falls.

Nothing else is tied to frozen peaks, so the packed ice, the ice formations and the climb are the rest of it. Inside the mountain itself the world keeps building without looking up: mineshaft tunnels inside the rock, dungeon rooms off the tunnels, and rarely a stronghold. That tower is the main reason to seek out ground this high, and finding it means climbing: it is guarded, and its captain carries the banner whose effect triggers Bad Omen. Reasons to climb are thin and the outpost reaches only a handful of biomes anyway, but among the peaks it is the one thing put there by anyone.

Forty one passes, one of the shortest lists in the Overworld, because almost nothing grows at this height. The only pass that is not simply the standard ore and spring list is a frozen lava spring at 20 tries per chunk, which four cold biomes share. No trees, no flowers, no grass.

Goats are the only thing that spawns this high, and they are the same goats you get on any peak. Around them the biome is classed cold for farm animals, cold for frogs, white for rabbits and snowy for foxes.

It is on the stronghold list too, which is a long climb down to a portal room.

An outpost is the only thing that stands on the frozen peaks, and it comes with its own pillager spawn list laid over the biome.

The portal up here is the mountain variant, and the mineshafts and chambers are as deep as they are everywhere else, which from this summit is a very long way down.
