Plains

Plains biome in Minecraft
CommonoverworldTemperate

One of the most common biomes. Villages spawn frequently here. Excellent for early-game building due to flat terrain.

Overview

The Plains biome is a common biome you will run into often, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a temperate biome. Its climate is warm and humid, so the Plains gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.8 and the biome ID minecraft:plains.

Its defining terrain features are flat terrain, tall grass, occasional oak trees and sunflowers (sunflower variant). One of the most common biomes. Villages spawn frequently here. Excellent for early-game building due to flat terrain.

The Plains biome was added to Minecraft in Alpha 1.2.0 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Plains you find will shift from world to world.

Where to find it

The Plains biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Forest, Sunflower Plains, Desert, Savanna and River, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

Because plains are so widespread, you usually spawn in or beside one; flat horizons and grazing animals are the giveaway.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:plains”, which points you to the nearest Plains and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Plains on foot: because it is common, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

Mobs

On the peaceful side, the Plains biome is home to Cow, Pig, Sheep, Chicken, Horse and Donkey. The Cow, for example, drops leather and beef and can be milked with a bucket. Together they make the Plains a useful place to gather food, leather and other animal drops.

Blocks & resources

The blocks that give the Plains biome its character include Grass Block, Tall Grass, Dandelion, Poppy, Azure Bluet and Oxeye Daisy. Within the Plains, Grass Block, Tall Grass, Dandelion and Poppy are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

Players typically visit the Plains biome to collect wood from its trees and flowers for dyes, which makes it a worthwhile stop for stocking up on several resources at once.

Structures & features

The Plains biome can generate a Village, a community of trading villagers with farms, an iron golem and beds, where the building palette matches the biome's wood and stone and a Pillager Outpost, a watchtower guarded by pillagers and a captain whose banner triggers the Bad Omen effect.

With Village and Pillager Outpost all able to appear in the Plains biome, it is well worth exploring thoroughly, as each of these 2 structures offers its own loot and challenges.
