Stony Peaks

A mountain top that never got its snow. Stony peaks caps mountains that rise out of warm country, so what you find at the summit is bare stone with bands of calcite running through it, plus andesite, granite and diorite.

Nothing spawns here at all, and nothing is built here, which leaves the stone and the view. The calcite is the reason to climb: it generates in very few places above ground.

Temperature 1 with 0.3 humidity is a warm climate for a summit, so rainfall rather than snow, which is exactly why the peak stays grey. minecraft:stony_peaks is uncommon, came with the 1.18 mountains, and 26.2 still puts it over every warm range.

It caps mountains that rise out of warm regions, so the summit is bare stone rather than snow.

Uncommon, and it needs that heat below to exist, so look for tall ground in warm regions rather than cold ones. Calcite runs through the stone up there in veins, and nothing at all spawns on it. Stay in warm country and ordinary exploration is worth more than a plan: it forms only where a range crosses a hot border, so following the highest ground in the most southern place you can reach is the whole of the signposts, and that often ends at bare rock.

Nothing is listed as spawning naturally on stony peaks. Bare stone and calcite are not a valid spawn block, so passive animals cannot generate on them, and the ridge stays open and well lit enough to keep hostile mobs away while the sun is up.

In practice the creatures you will meet up here wander in from the meadow, the grove or whatever the slope runs down into, because those biomes have the surfaces this one lacks, and the wind keeps the rest away too.

The first thing to gather is Stone and Calcite, and the calcite is what makes this peak worth the climb: it runs in bands through the rock rather than hiding in a geode, so you can quarry it in daylight. Andesite, Granite and Diorite come out of the same face.

Exposed stone makes surface coal, copper and iron easy to spot, and on a stony peak the ore is in the wall at eye level instead of forty blocks under you.

In terms of mining, the peak gives you the whole stone family without a single torch.

Bare rock, calcite strips and no buildings. Stony peaks holds nothing built, so what it rewards is the exposed stone mountain top itself, warm enough up here that the snow never settles.

A pillager outpost can generate nearby, since that watchtower belongs to twelve biomes in this list. Inside the rock the work carries on regardless of biome edges, and mineshaft tunnels inside it, dungeon rooms hollowed off them and the rare stronghold can all be dug out beneath these peaks. Scenery rather than buildings is the reward for exploring, though the dungeons and mineshafts generated inside the peaks, with an occasional stronghold deeper still, are tied to no biome and ignore boundaries entirely. Generation like that ignores whatever sits above it, which is why such stone is as bare as it looks.

Forty passes, the shortest list of any Overworld biome, and not one of them belongs to this page. No trees, no grass, no flowers, no ice: what runs here is the standard ore, spring and cave list and nothing else. The bare stone is not a texture choice, it is an empty vegetation list.

Stony peaks are classed cold for farm animals but not for anything else: no white rabbits, no snow foxes, no cold frogs, because the biome has no snow on it.

Nothing spawns on the bare stone by itself, so the cold marker sits unused, and the peak is on the stronghold list.

An outpost on the bare stone and a mountain portal are the whole surface list, which fits a biome that spawns nothing on its own either.

The chambers underneath sit between y -40 and y -20 like everywhere else, with every spawn category emptied inside their walls.

Stony peaks are bare rock, and that is what they are good for. Stone, andesite, granite and diorite are all exposed at the surface here, so you can quarry all four without digging a shaft, and the calcite strips running through the rock are the easiest calcite outside an amethyst geode.

No mob spawns on the stony peaks at all, which makes them one of the safest places in the overworld to build. At a temperature of 1 the summit stays bare instead of snowed over, which is what separates it from every other peak.

Stony Peaks is the warm summit, at temperature 1 on both Java and Bedrock, with a downfall of 0.3 on each, and the id needs no translation.

It is also one of the few biomes for which Bedrock lists no snow depth at all, which fits: at temperature 1 nothing freezes on these rocks, and rain runs off them instead.

Stony Peaks arrived in 1.18 with the name it still carries, and Stony Peaks has kept it through all 32 releases since.
