Jungle

Green in three storeys. Jungle trees grow two blocks thick and tall enough to lose the sky, vines hang off everything, melons and cocoa grow at ground level, and bamboo pushes up through the gaps.

Ocelots stalk the undergrowth, parrots sit in the canopy and pandas eat the bamboo, and none of the three lives in many other biomes. Jungle temples are hidden in the leaves with a redstone puzzle, an arrow trap and a chest behind both. Fire spreads badly in all that damp, which is the one mercy of the place.

Temperature 0.95 with 0.9 humidity is as warm and wet a climate as the Overworld gets, so rainfall and no snow. minecraft:jungle is uncommon, has been in the game since 1.2.1, and 26.2 still grows it thick.

Jungle is hot, wet Overworld ground. Bamboo Jungle, Sparse Jungle, Swamp and Savanna all touch it, and the jump in tree height at the border is unmistakable.

Look for hot, humid terrain packed with very tall trees, hanging vines, melons and cocoa.

Uncommon, and the trouble starts once you are inside rather than on the way there: the canopy hides the sky and vines fill the space below it. Cut in along a river, and a jungle pyramid is usually the first thing you meet. Most people cross one while travelling for reasons of their own: the tree line is signposts enough, and following a river in is often the least work.

Parrots are the animal you will actually see, on 44 percent of the spawn attempts, one or two at a time. A tamed parrot perches on your shoulder and mimics the sounds of whatever mob is nearby, which is the closest thing to a warning system the jungle offers.

Chickens hold 11 percent arriving four together, laying eggs and dropping feathers with their raw chicken. Pandas are rare at roughly 1 percent, one or two at once, each with a randomised personality, and they breed only where bamboo is nearby. The ocelot is rarer still, closer to 1 in 250: it cannot be tamed, but raw cod coaxes one near, and its presence scares off creepers and phantoms. Counted per attempt, the parrot is 44% of the animals and the panda 1 in 91, with the ocelot at 1 in 250. A panda has randomised personalities and breeds when bamboo is nearby, and an ocelot, coaxed close with raw cod, scares creepers and phantoms away while the parrots keep to themselves overhead. A parrot, for example, will sit on your shoulder all day.

Jungle Log, Jungle Leaves, Vine and Melon are what you take home first, and Cocoa Beans and Bamboo come off the same trees on the way. Jungle wood is the tallest in the Overworld and grows 2x2, so one trunk is a building.

Bamboo, Jungle Log and Melon all grow in only a handful of biomes, and this is the one that has all three at once. Melons keep growing back from the stem, so a jungle is food you never replant.

Vines climb everything here, which is free scaffolding on the way up and a nuisance on the way down, and cocoa only grows on jungle logs, so both come out of the same trip.

Fire burns itself out faster here than it does elsewhere, which is the only reason a lightning strike does not take the whole canopy.

Of those six blocks the logs are worth taking home first by a wide margin, and no other block on the list pays for the climb the way a jungle log does. The harvest plays by jungle rules: take the top of the tree before the bottom or you climb it twice.

Few biomes stack this much growth into a single chunk, and few of them are this dark at ground level in broad daylight.

The jungle temple is a trap dressed as a building. A mossy cobblestone ziggurat sits under the canopy with two tripwire arrow traps on the way in and a redstone lever puzzle at the back, and only two biomes in the whole list generate one.

Getting to it is half the job, because tall jungle trees, vines and dense vegetation hide a stone structure well. Trail Ruins can also appear here, one of six biomes with them.

Nothing else is tied to the jungle, so melons, cocoa beans and bamboo are the rest of what you carry out. Mineshaft tunnels sit below the roots, dungeon rooms deeper than that, a rare stronghold deeper again, all placed without regard for the canopy above. Finding the temple, protected as it is, is the main reason people seek a jungle out, and that generation reaches only two biomes.

Fifty trees per chunk, and fifty one on one chunk in ten, which is a thousand times the plains rate and the highest of any biome in the game. Vines get 127 tries, melons come on one chunk in six with 64 tries, and light bamboo lands on one chunk in four. Forty nine passes, and the jungle uses more of them on plants than anything else does.

Ocelots, parrots and pandas are what the jungle spawns, and none of them has a temperature variant. The chickens that spawn with them do: the jungle is warm ground, so they come out in the warm form.

Frogs raised in this heat are warm frogs, which is the same class the mangrove swamp uses, and the biome is on the stronghold list.

The jungle pyramid generates in this biome and in the bamboo jungle and nowhere else, and the jungle version of the ruined portal is limited to the same family of biomes.

The jungle is also one of six biomes with trail ruins buried at fifteen blocks below zero, so there is a temple above the ground and a ruin under it.

Jungle pays out 3 different drops across the mobs on its spawn list: feathers, chicken and bamboo.

Parrot is the one to build a farm on: it takes 44 percent of the animal draw in Jungle and drops feathers. Behind it in the same draw come Chicken on 11 percent for chicken and feathers and Panda on 1.1 percent for bamboo.

The jungle is the biggest single haul in the overworld. Jungle logs come off trees several storeys tall, melons and cocoa beans grow wild, bamboo shoots up between them and vines hang off everything, so food, wood, dye and a renewable fuel all come out of one biome.

Ocelots, parrots and pandas spawn only in jungles, and a jungle pyramid holds the arrow dispensers and the hidden chest that make it the most dangerous structure of its size. Chickens fill out the animal list.

The jungle uses the same id and the same numbers on both editions: temperature 0.95, downfall 0.9, wetter than almost anything outside the swamps.

Its water is #3F76E4 on Java and #14a2c5 on Bedrock. Bedrock also generates jungle_hills and jungle_mutated as biomes of their own, which Java listed as Jungle Hills and Modified Jungle before 1.18 merged them here.

Jungle has carried the same name in every release since 1.13, 51 of them, and the biome was added to Java Edition in 1.2.1. The rename round of 1.18 left Jungle alone.

Getting Adventuring Time means visiting Jungle at least once. 56 biomes count, 11 do not, and Jungle is one of the 11 warm biomes on the counting side.
