Windswept Forest

Forested variant of windswept hills. Combines dramatic elevation with dense tree coverage. Previously called Wooded Mountains.
Overview
Steep hills with trees on them. Oak and spruce hold the slopes of this windswept variant, which makes it the only one of the three you can walk through in shade.
Emerald ore runs through the stone here as it does in the other windswept biomes, so you can cut wood and mine gems on the same hillside. Llamas, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens live on the flatter shelves. It answered to Wooded Mountains before the renaming.
Temperature 0.2 and humidity 0.3 give it a cool climate with rainfall instead of snow. minecraft:windswept_forest is uncommon, dates from 1.7.2, and 1.21 still grows trees on the dramatic ground.
Where to find it
Steep Overworld hill country with trees still standing on it. Windswept Hills, Windswept Gravelly Hills and Forest border it.
Combine steep windswept terrain with a cover of oak and spruce trees; it was formerly called Wooded Mountains.
Uncommon, and it comes with the one ore that is fussy about where it sits, since emerald ore generates in these windswept biomes. Oak and spruce hold the slopes, and llamas walk them. The Overworld is where it belongs, since neither of the far dimensions makes hills that appear like these. The biome tends to sit against its two windswept relatives, so find those first and you will cross this one while travelling for reasons of your own, because the three of them run together often enough.
Mobs
Trees on a steep slope, and the same five animals as the bare version of it. Sheep 27 percent of the spawn attempts, pigs and chickens 22 percent apiece, cows 18 percent, and llamas 11 percent four at once to six.
Llamas spit at whatever attacks them and can be linked into a caravan with leads, which is the sensible way to move anything up these hills. Sheep regrow wool after shearing once they have eaten grass, cows carry beef and leather and fill a bucket with milk, pigs drop porkchops and can be ridden under a saddle and a carrot tied to a stick, and chickens lay eggs and drop feathers with their raw chicken. They keep to themselves up here. Per attempt the chicken is about a sixth of the animals, four to six llamas at a time; sheep give mutton, a cow drops leather and gives milk to a bucket, and a llama, for example, spits at attackers and can be linked into caravans with leads. Turn your back on any of them and nothing happens. Llamas arrive 4 to 6 at a time. A cow is milked the same way with a bucket at any altitude.
Blocks & resources
Oak Log and Spruce Log on the same steep ground, with Stone showing through wherever the slope beats the soil, and Emerald Ore in that stone. It is the only emerald biome with a proper wood on it.
Emerald ore generates here like the other windswept biomes, so the harvest is wood from its trees and a stack of emeralds from the same hillside, which is a rare combination this far from a village.
The trees are put down by a rule of their own rather than the forest one, which is how oak and spruce end up mixed on a cliff instead of sorted into separate woods.
In terms of what the generator does here, the whole hillside is filled with trees where the neighbouring windswept hills are left bare.
The stone gives you the ore and the wood gives you everything else, which is a short supply list for a biome this awkward to walk across.
Structures & features
Trees on ground too steep for them. Windswept forest carries no structure of its own, so the forested steep hills, the oak and spruce clinging to them and the dramatic terrain underneath are the reward for the climb.
What the slopes give you is access. Stone is exposed across the hillsides, emerald ore sits inside them, and mineshaft tunnels, dungeon rooms cut off them and a stronghold on occasion are placed under all of it without a glance at the trees on the slope. A climb and its scenery are what exploring rewards, rather than buildings, and beneath the slope the dungeons and mineshafts generated there ignore biome boundaries, occasional stronghold included. Generation dug it, tied to nothing on this slope, and it ignores the biome above, which is why such a shaft can open in a slope you are climbing.
Biome Colors
The windswept group's colours, which six pages carry, and no music, no fog and no particles of its own. Temperature 0.2 with humidity 0.3 puts it among the cold dry biomes even though trees still grow. Three carvers run underneath, and on this terrain they open in the cliff faces rather than in the ground.
Terrain Features
- -forested steep hills
- -oak and spruce trees
- -dramatic terrain
What generates per chunk
Three trees per chunk, four on one chunk in ten, from a pass this biome keeps to itself. That is a third of what a normal forest plants, and on ground this steep it reads as far less. Forty nine passes in total, and everything else in the list is the standard Overworld one.
Spawn rules and animal variants
This is the only windswept biome with a proper wood standing on it, and like the other two it is on the cold farm animal list, so the cows and chickens between the oaks and spruces come out cold while the ones in an ordinary forest do not.
Llamas spawn on the same slopes, and the biome is a stronghold candidate.
Structure depths and forced spawns
Trees on top change nothing about the build list: no village, no outpost, a mountain portal, and mineshafts and chambers underneath.
It is the third windswept page with an identical list, which is the clearest sign that these three are variants of one biome rather than three ideas.
How to Find
Oak and spruce clinging to dramatic slopes make the forested version of this terrain, and that is what the /locate biome query is for, since oak and spruce on those dramatic slopes are their own biome:
Steep woodland requires cheats to be enabled before the steep woodland can be named, or operator permissions on a server, yet the trees the command names grow on ground you can fall off, whatever path you use.
