End Barrens

End Barrens biome in Minecraft
CommonendThe End

The outermost End biome on the edges of islands. No structures generate here. Mostly barren end stone with no chorus plants.

Overview

The rim. End barrens is the outer edge of a large End island, bare end stone falling away into the void, with nothing growing on it and nothing built on it.

There is no city here, no chorus plant and no loot: this is the biome you cross to reach the ones that have them. Endermen are the only thing that spawns, and the drop is the real hazard, so bridge before you walk.

Temperature 0.5, permanently weatherless: no weather, no rain and no snow anywhere in the End. minecraft:end_barrens has edged the islands since 1.9, and 1.21 still ends them that way.

Where to find it

You arrive in the End through a Stronghold portal, and this rim comes after that. End Highlands, End Midlands and Small End Islands all lie next to it.

It forms the bare outer rims of the large End islands, dropping away into the void.

Common out there, and the least rewarding place to land: end stone, endermen, and a drop into the void at the edge. Cross it rather than stop on it. It lies behind an activated End Portal, so that gate comes first and the gateway second. Walking in any direction along the rim usually finds one, because the barrens tends to sit against the outer edge, and you rarely have to hunt for it.

Mobs

The barrens list one mob: endermen, four at a time, on ground with a void on both sides of it.

That combination is worse than it reads. An enderman teleports, picks up blocks and turns hostile only if you look directly at its head, and a fight on an island edge this narrow ends with one of you falling. There is nothing else here, friendly or otherwise, to make the crossing interesting. Per spawn attempt the enderman is all of the hostile spawns, and that is the whole census of the barrens.

Blocks & resources

End Stone and nothing else, and the emptiness is the fact: no chorus, no city, no ore, no structure of any kind on the whole ring. What is here is the drop.

The barrens are the outer edge of the large islands, so they are the last solid ground before the void, and that makes them the cheapest place in the End to build a bridge from and the worst place to fall out of a boat.

The ring is made of the same block as the island behind it, and nothing at all has been added on top.

Structures & features

The barrens are named accurately. Nothing generated is tied to the barrens, so the barren end islands, the edges they form around larger ones and the void under them are what exploring rewards, which is to say nothing you can put in a chest.

Any End structure you find from here will belong to the neighbouring outer islands rather than to the barrens itself. Treat it as the shoulder of the road: it tells you a highland island with a city on it is close, and it is a short flight from one to the other. Exploring rewards scenery and a view of the void rather than buildings, and nothing generated out here belongs to the barrens themselves.

foliage

sky
#000000

The sky is #000000, which the five End pages share and nothing else does. There is no music entry, no fog, no particles and, unusually, no carvers at all: not one of the three Overworld carvers reaches the End, so nothing hollows this rock out. The grass and leaf values are inherited defaults that you will never see, because neither grows here.

What generates per chunk

Zero passes. Not one of them runs over an end barrens chunk, which makes this the emptiest biome in the game by the only measure that counts. There is no ore, no plant, no spring and no structure feature. Everything you find out here was either dropped by a player or is the island itself.

Spawn rules and animal variants

Cold for farm animals, cold for frogs, and completely empty: the end barrens carry the same classification as every other End biome and even less to apply it to.

Endermen wander in from the islands behind, and that is the whole census.

Structure depths and forced spawns

The barrens build nothing. No city, no ship, no ruin, and no structure of any kind reaches this far out on an island.

It shares that empty list with the small end islands and the central island, which makes three of the five End pages structurally empty.

How to Find

The bare rim of a large island has nothing on it at all, which makes it hard to name from the air, so try the /locate biome lookup, so the bare rim of a large island gets a coordinate of its own:

/locate biome minecraft:end_barrens

A bare rim requires cheats to be enabled wherever the bare rim is stored, or operator permissions on a server, though the void starts one block past the coordinate you use.
