Snowy Beach

Generates where cold biomes meet the ocean. The shore is covered in snow. Water at the edge may freeze.
Overview of Snowy Beach
Where a cold biome runs into the sea you get a snowy beach: sand with snow lying on it, sandstone underneath, and water at the edge that may freeze over.
Nothing spawns here of its own, which makes it the quietest shoreline in the game. What it does have is loot: buried treasure hides in the sand, and only one other biome holds that, while shipwrecks run aground along the same strip. Rabbits and foxes born on this side of the treeline come out white.
Temperature 0.05 with 0.3 humidity is a cold climate by a hair, so snowfall rather than rain. minecraft:snowy_beach is common wherever cold land meets water, arrived in 1.7.2, and 26.2 still draws that white line between the two.
Where to find Snowy Beach
Overworld shoreline in cold country. Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga and Frozen Ocean meet along it, which is exactly what it is: the seam between them.
It forms the thin snow-dusted shoreline wherever a cold land biome meets the sea.
Common wherever cold land reaches the sea. Nothing spawns on the sand itself, so it is a quiet place to put a dock, with sandstone under the snow to build one from. The other dimensions have no coast, so none of this can appear there, and exploration along any cold shore does the work: watch for the line where snow stops and sand starts.
Mobs in Snowy Beach
No mobs spawn naturally on a snowy beach. Sand under snow is not a valid spawn block for passive animals, so they cannot generate here at all, because the surface itself refuses them, and the open, well lit shore keeps hostile mobs away too until the light goes.
In practice the creatures you will meet here wander in from those neighbours: the snowy plains, the frozen ocean and the snowy taiga all border it, which makes the beach a corridor rather than a home for anything.
Snowy Beach blocks & resources
Sand, Snow and Sandstone. A beach with a snow layer over it, and the sandstone under the sand is the same block you would dig on a warm shore.
What it is really good for is the boundary: cold water on one side, sand on the other, and turtles do not lay here, so the shore stays clear for a dock.
Breaking the snow layer is worth doing before you build: the sand under it is what a dock needs, and it is already flat enough to build on.
Structures & features in Snowy Beach
Two things turn up along this shore rather than on it. A shipwreck can lie in the water at the edge, one of eleven biomes here where a sunken vessel generates, and its chests hold supplies, emeralds and a treasure map. The map is the point: it marks buried treasure, a single loot chest that reaches only two biomes across these pages and usually holds a Heart of the Sea.
No generated building is tied to the snowy sand itself, so the shores, the snow over them and the frozen water edge are what exploring rewards. Under the sand the world places what it likes: mineshaft tunnels under the shore, a dungeon room off them, a stronghold if one fell nearby. Nothing generated stands on the snow itself, so what is dug beneath it, dungeons and mineshafts with an occasional stronghold, belongs to no shore in particular and ignores biome boundaries as usual. The scenery and the buildings you put up are your own business. Generation of the ordinary kind, in other words, so such a shaft can open right on the waterline.
Snowy Beach biome colours
A shade of its own: #83B593 grass and #64A278 leaves, used by this page alone, and a sky at #88A8FF that no other biome sets. The temperature is 0.05, just above freezing, which is exactly why the sand keeps its snow but the sea beside it does not turn to ice. There is no music and no fog value.

Snowy Beach: what generates per chunk
Forty five passes and none of them belong to this biome. A snowy beach is an ordinary beach list with the temperature turned down, so the snow layer on top comes from the climate rather than from anything placed. No trees, no grass, no flowers.
Snowy Beach: spawn rules and variants
Nothing spawns naturally on a snowy beach, and yet it carries four separate rules: white rabbits, snow foxes, cold farm animals and cold frogs.
That makes it the clearest example on this site of a classification with nothing to classify, and it is one of the few beaches that is not on the stronghold list.
Snowy Beach: structure depths and spawns
Buried treasure and a beached shipwreck are the two things this shore builds, and both are the reason to bring a shovel rather than a pickaxe.
The mineshafts and the chambers below follow the ordinary pattern, the chambers in the -40 to -20 band with their spawn lists blanked out.
Which biomes border Snowy Beach
Step out of Snowy Beach and the reading changes by up to 0.5, from -0.5 to 0.
- Snowy Plains: 0.05 colder at 0, Polar Bear, Rabbit and Stray come in, with Village and Pillager Outpost on that side.
- Snowy Taiga: 0.55 colder at -0.5, Wolf, Rabbit and Fox come in, with Igloo and Abandoned Camp on that side.
- Frozen Ocean: 0.05 colder at 0, Squid, Salmon and Drowned turn up, with Ocean Ruins and Shipwreck on that side.
What Snowy Beach is good for
A snowy beach is a working sand supply that happens to be under snow: sand and sandstone come out of the ground the same way they do on a warm beach, with snow layers on top for snowballs.
No mob spawns naturally on a snowy beach, which makes it one of the quietest strips of land in the game and a reasonable place to leave a boat. Buried treasure and shipwrecks can both generate here, so it is worth walking with a map in hand.
How to find Snowy Beach
Snow on sand is a thin strip between land and frozen water, easy to walk straight past, so run the /locate biome call, since a strip of snowy sand is easy to sail past without noticing:
A snowy strip requires cheats to be enabled on the world where snow meets that sand, or operator permissions on a server, yet the strip you use it to reach is often only a few blocks deep.
Snowy Beach on Java Edition against Snowy Beach on Bedrock
The snowy beach is cold_beach on Bedrock, the older name for the same sand. Both editions agree on a temperature of 0.05, just above freezing, and a downfall of 0.3.
Water along this shore is #3F76E4 on Java and #1463a5 on Bedrock, and snow on the sand settles between an eighth and a quarter of a block, a depth Java does not track.

Snowy Beach name and version history
Every release since 1.13, 51 in total, has called this biome Snowy Beach. It goes back to 1.7.2, and where eleven other biomes were renamed in 1.18, Snowy Beach was not one of them.
- 1.7.2Snowy Beach starts generating
- Bedrockstill uses the id cold_beach
Snowy Beach: which advancements count
Adventuring Time needs 56 biomes and Snowy Beach is one of them, counted with the other 8 cold biomes. The 11 it does not ask for are the five in the Nether, the four outer End biomes, the End itself and the void.
