Sunflower Plains

The Sunflower Plains biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a temperate biome. Its climate is warm and humid, so the Sunflower Plains gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.8 and the biome ID minecraft:sunflower_plains.

Its defining terrain features are flat terrain, sunflower patches and tall grass. The only biome where sunflowers naturally generate. Sunflowers always face east, making them a natural compass.

The Sunflower Plains biome was added to Minecraft in 1.7.2 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Sunflower Plains you find will shift from world to world.

The Sunflower Plains biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Plains, Forest and River, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

Scan for the bright yellow sunflower patches that appear nowhere else in the game.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:sunflower_plains”, which points you to the nearest Sunflower Plains and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Sunflower Plains on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

On the peaceful side, the Sunflower Plains biome is home to Cow, Pig, Sheep, Chicken, Horse and Donkey. The Cow, for example, drops leather and beef and can be milked with a bucket. Together they make the Sunflower Plains a useful place to gather food, leather and other animal drops.

The blocks that give the Sunflower Plains biome its character include Sunflower, Grass Block and Tall Grass. Within the Sunflower Plains, Sunflower, Grass Block and Tall Grass are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

Players typically visit the Sunflower Plains biome to collect flowers for dyes, which makes it a worthwhile stop for that resource.

No generated structures are tied to the Sunflower Plains biome, so exploring it rewards you with its flat terrain and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the Sunflower Plains.
