Windswept Savanna

The Windswept Savanna biome is a rare biome that can require travelling a long way to locate, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a warm biome. Its climate is extremely hot and arid, so it never rains here, so the Windswept Savanna gets no precipitation at all and stays permanently dry. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 2 and the biome ID minecraft:windswept_savanna.

Its defining terrain features are dramatic terrain, steep cliffs, floating islands and coarse dirt. The most extreme terrain in the game. Features massive overhangs, floating islands, and dramatic cliffs. Previously called Shattered Savanna.

The Windswept Savanna biome was added to Minecraft in 1.7.2 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Windswept Savanna you find will shift from world to world.

The Windswept Savanna biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Savanna and Savanna Plateau, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

It is rare; look for wildly broken savanna terrain with overhangs and floating chunks of land.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:windswept_savanna”, which points you to the nearest Windswept Savanna and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Windswept Savanna on foot: because it is rare, be prepared to cover a lot of ground in search of it, ideally with a fast mount, boat or elytra.

On the peaceful side, the Windswept Savanna biome is home to Cow, Pig, Sheep, Chicken, Horse, Donkey and Armadillo. The Cow, for example, drops leather and beef and can be milked with a bucket. Together they make the Windswept Savanna a useful place to gather food, leather and other animal drops.

On the dangerous side of the Windswept Savanna biome, watch for Llama. The Llama spits at attackers and can be linked into caravans with leads.

The blocks that give the Windswept Savanna biome its character include Acacia Log, Coarse Dirt and Stone. Within the Windswept Savanna, Acacia Log, Coarse Dirt and Stone are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

Players typically visit the Windswept Savanna biome to collect wood from its trees, which makes it a worthwhile stop for that resource.

No generated structures are tied to the Windswept Savanna biome, so exploring it rewards you with its dramatic terrain and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the Windswept Savanna.
