Deep Dark

The Deep Dark biome is a rare biome that can require travelling a long way to locate, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as an underground biome. Its climate is warm and humid, so the Deep Dark gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.8 and the biome ID minecraft:deep_dark.

Its defining terrain features are sculk growth, ancient cities, sculk sensors and extremely dark. The most dangerous underground biome. Home to the Warden, which is attracted by vibrations and can deal massive damage. Ancient Cities contain unique loot including echo shards and disc fragments.

The Deep Dark biome was added to Minecraft in 1.19 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Deep Dark you find will shift from world to world.

The Deep Dark biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders underground deepslate layers, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

It only forms deep underground, well below y=0, in the deepslate layer; sculk patches and total darkness signal you have arrived.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:deep_dark”, which points you to the nearest Deep Dark and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Deep Dark on foot: because it is rare, be prepared to cover a lot of ground in search of it, ideally with a fast mount, boat or elytra.

The hostile life of the Deep Dark biome is led by Warden. The Warden is blind but tracks vibrations and smell, dealing the highest melee damage of any mob.

What makes the Deep Dark special is that the Warden spawns here and almost nowhere else in the game, so this is the biome to visit if you want to find it.

The blocks that give the Deep Dark biome its character include Sculk, Sculk Vein, Sculk Sensor, Sculk Catalyst, Sculk Shrieker and Reinforced Deepslate. Within the Deep Dark, Sculk, Sculk Vein, Sculk Sensor and Sculk Catalyst are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

The Deep Dark biome can generate an Ancient City, a vast deepslate ruin built around the Warden, holding echo shards, the Swift Sneak enchantment and disc fragments.

Finding the Ancient City is one of the main reasons to seek out the Deep Dark biome.
