Frozen River

Frozen variant of the river biome. Water surface generates as ice. Strays can spawn here instead of regular skeletons.
Overview
The Frozen River biome is a common biome you will run into often, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a cold biome. Its climate is freezing, so water turns to ice and rainfall falls as snow, so the Frozen River gets snowfall rather than rain. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0 and the biome ID minecraft:frozen_river.
Its defining terrain features are frozen water surface, ice layer and snowy banks. Frozen variant of the river biome. Water surface generates as ice. Strays can spawn here instead of regular skeletons.
The Frozen River biome was added to Minecraft in Beta 1.8 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Frozen River you find will shift from world to world.
Where to find it
The Frozen River biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga and Frozen Ocean, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.
Trace a river through cold, snowy terrain; its surface will be frozen solid into ice.
If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:frozen_river”, which points you to the nearest Frozen River and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Frozen River on foot: because it is common, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.
Mobs
On the peaceful side, the Frozen River biome is home to Squid and Salmon. The Squid, for example, drops ink sacs used for black dye and books-and-quill. Together they make the Frozen River a useful place to gather fish and other aquatic resources.
On the dangerous side of the Frozen River biome, watch for Drowned and Stray. The Drowned is an underwater zombie that can wield a trident and drops nautilus shells, while the Stray is a frozen skeleton that fires Slowness-tipped arrows.
Blocks & resources
The blocks that give the Frozen River biome its character include Ice, Snow Block and Snow. Within the Frozen River, Ice, Snow Block and Snow are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.
Structures & features
No generated structures are tied to the Frozen River biome, so exploring it rewards you with its frozen water surface and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the Frozen River.
