Lush Caves biome in Minecraft
UncommonoverworldUnderground

A beautiful underground biome. Axolotls spawn exclusively here. Azalea trees on the surface indicate lush caves below. Glow berries provide natural light.

Overview

The Lush Caves biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as an underground biome. Its climate is mild and temperate, so the Lush Caves gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.5 and the biome ID minecraft:lush_caves.

Its defining terrain features are cave vegetation, clay pools, dripleaf, glow berries and azalea trees. A beautiful underground biome. Axolotls spawn exclusively here. Azalea trees on the surface indicate lush caves below. Glow berries provide natural light.

The Lush Caves biome was added to Minecraft in 1.18 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Lush Caves you find will shift from world to world.

Where to find it

The Lush Caves biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Dripstone Caves and underground cave systems, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

A surface azalea bush or azalea tree marks lush caves directly below; dig down beneath one to reach the cavern.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:lush_caves”, which points you to the nearest Lush Caves and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Lush Caves on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

Mobs

On the peaceful side, the Lush Caves biome is home to Axolotl, Glow Squid and Tropical Fish. The Axolotl, for example, fights hostile aquatic mobs alongside the player and plays dead when hurt. Together they make the Lush Caves a useful place to gather fish and other aquatic resources.

What makes the Lush Caves special is that the Axolotl spawns here and almost nowhere else in the game, so this is the biome to visit if you want to find it.

Blocks & resources

The blocks that give the Lush Caves biome its character include Moss Block, Moss Carpet, Glow Berries, Cave Vines, Dripleaf, Azalea, Spore Blossom, Rooted Dirt and Hanging Roots. Within the Lush Caves, Moss Block, Moss Carpet, Glow Berries and Cave Vines are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

Players typically visit the Lush Caves biome to collect wood from its trees and sweet berries, which makes it a worthwhile stop for stocking up on several resources at once.

Structures & features

No generated structures are tied to the Lush Caves biome, so exploring it rewards you with its cave vegetation and scenery rather than buildings to loot. Generation that ignores biome boundaries, such as mineshafts, dungeons and the occasional stronghold, can still be dug up beneath the Lush Caves.
