Dark Forest

Dark Forest biome in Minecraft
UncommonoverworldTemperate

The only biome where Woodland Mansions generate. The thick canopy creates low light levels, allowing hostile mobs to spawn during the day.

Overview

The Dark Forest biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as a temperate biome. Its climate is mild and temperate, so the Dark Forest gets rainfall. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0.7 and the biome ID minecraft:dark_forest.

Its defining terrain features are dense dark oak canopy, giant mushrooms and low light level under trees. The only biome where Woodland Mansions generate. The thick canopy creates low light levels, allowing hostile mobs to spawn during the day.

The Dark Forest biome was added to Minecraft in 1.7.2 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Dark Forest you find will shift from world to world.

Where to find it

The Dark Forest biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Forest, Birch Forest and Plains, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

Its dark, almost black canopy of clustered dark-oak is visible from a distance and stays dim even at noon.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:dark_forest”, which points you to the nearest Dark Forest and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Dark Forest on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

Mobs

On the peaceful side, the Dark Forest biome is home to Cow, Pig, Sheep and Chicken. The Cow, for example, drops leather and beef and can be milked with a bucket. Together they make the Dark Forest a useful place to gather food, leather and other animal drops.

What makes the Dark Forest special is that the Witch spawns here and almost nowhere else in the game, so this is the biome to visit if you want to find it.

Blocks & resources

The blocks that give the Dark Forest biome its character include Dark Oak Log, Dark Oak Leaves, Red Mushroom Block and Brown Mushroom Block. Within the Dark Forest, Dark Oak Log, Dark Oak Leaves, Red Mushroom Block and Brown Mushroom Block are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

Players typically visit the Dark Forest biome to collect wood from its trees, which makes it a worthwhile stop for that resource.

Structures & features

The Dark Forest biome can generate a Woodland Mansion, an enormous dark-oak fortress containing illagers, vindicators, evokers and rare loot rooms.

Finding the Woodland Mansion is one of the main reasons to seek out the Dark Forest biome.
