Deep Dark

Deep Dark biome in Minecraft
RareoverworldUnderground

The most dangerous underground biome. Home to the Warden, which is attracted by vibrations and can deal massive damage. Ancient Cities contain unique loot including echo shards and disc fragments.

Overview

Silence is the point. The deep dark grows sculk over everything: sculk veins up the walls, sensors that listen for footsteps, shriekers that call the Warden, and sculk itself, which generates in this biome and nowhere else.

Ancient cities sit in the middle of it, built from reinforced deepslate and holding echo shards, disc fragments and Swift Sneak. No mineshaft can generate here, alone among biomes, so every tunnel you find is city. Nothing spawns naturally either, and that is the danger rather than the comfort: the Warden comes for the noise you make, not for the dark, and it hits harder than anything else in the game.

On paper its climate is warm and humid, temperature 0.8 against 0.4 humidity with rainfall rather than snow, but no weather reaches this far down. It is a rare underground biome that belongs to the Overworld and is still never seen from the surface, only under it. Which seed you play decides how deep and how wide it runs. minecraft:deep_dark arrived in 1.19 and 1.21 still generates it.

Where to find it

It lies in the Overworld but never on it. Underground deepslate layers are what it borders, so nothing on the surface tells you one is waiting below.

It only forms deep underground, well below y=0, in the deepslate layer; sculk patches and total darkness signal you have arrived.

Rare, and the search runs downward instead of outward. Ride a cave system past y=0 and then go quiet, because sculk carries every step you take to a warden long before you get to see it. On foot it is a project rather than a trip: the biome tends to sit under nothing in particular, so travel fast between cave mouths and you will meet one sooner.

Mobs

Nothing spawns here in the ordinary sense. No animal is listed, no wandering monster is listed, and the only thing that arrives does so because you called it.

The warden is what makes this biome special: it spawns here and almost nowhere else in the game, summoned by sculk shriekers after enough vibrations rather than by darkness. It is blind, it tracks vibration and smell instead, and it deals the highest melee damage of any mob in Minecraft.

That leaves crouching, wool and patience as the whole strategy, because there is nothing else down here to fight and nothing else to distract it. The warden is blind but tracks vibrations and smell, dealing the highest melee damage of any mob, so this is the biome to visit if you want to track one down it and the last one you want to visit twice. Nobody wants to find it twice, whatever they want out of the city below it.

Blocks & resources

Sculk, Sculk Vein, Sculk Sensor, Sculk Catalyst, Sculk Shrieker and Reinforced Deepslate. Sculk and Sculk Vein grow here and in no other biome, and the catalyst is what makes the rest: kill something near one and the sculk spreads over whatever it can reach.

Sculk drops experience of its own when you break it without silk touch, the sensor is a wireless redstone input you cannot craft anywhere else, and Reinforced Deepslate cannot be crafted at all, so what you carry out of here you can never make at home.

The sculk is put down in two passes, the wide patches first and the veins over the top of them, and neither of them touches the ordinary deepslate around the biome, which is why the border is so sharp.

Of those six blocks the sensor and the catalyst are worth taking home first, because both keep working the moment you place them again.

A Sculk Vein creeping over deepslate is how the sculk starts before the patches take the room.

Structures & features

The ancient city is the one structure tied to the deep dark, and it generates in no other biome on this site. A vast deepslate ruin spreads across the cave floor, built around the block the Warden answers to, and its chests hold echo shards, the Swift Sneak enchantment and the disc fragments you assemble into a record.

The building is also the trap. Sculk shriekers are laid through the floors, and enough vibrations near one summons the Warden into a room you cannot outrun. Wool over the sculk and crouching between chests is the way most people leave with the loot.

Nothing else generates here by design, though mineshaft tunnels, dungeon rooms and a stronghold if one is near pay no attention to the sculk and can break into the same deepslate. Finding the city is the main reason to seek the deep dark out at all. Reasons to go down this far are few and that city is the one, though an ancient city is not a place you walk into twice.

The colour data is completely ordinary: standard water, standard sky, the grass and leaves that 16 pages share. That is the point, because you never see any of it. What it does get is a track of its own, one of three cave biomes with one, and it comes back every 10 to 20 minutes.

Terrain Features

  • -sculk growth
  • -ancient cities
  • -sculk sensors
  • -extremely dark

What generates per chunk

Sculk is the only thing this biome plants, and it plants a great deal of it: a sculk patch gets 256 tries per chunk and sculk veins between 204 and 250. Both are unique to this page. Forty three passes run in total, and the surface list among them is the plains one, which is why the ground above a deep dark looks like nothing in particular.

Spawn rules and animal variants

Mineshafts are forbidden here, and the deep dark is the only biome in the world with that rule, which is why the tunnels stop dead at the border of it.

It is classed cold for farm animals and frogs, but nothing spawns in the deep dark at all except what the shriekers call up, so the classification never gets used.

Structure depths and forced spawns

The ancient city starts at exactly twenty seven blocks below zero, and it is allowed to run a hundred and sixteen blocks out from its centre, which is why the far corridors keep going long after you think you have seen the end of it.

Inside its box the game empties every spawn category it has: monsters, animals, water creatures, ambient, the lot. Nothing spawns in an ancient city except what you wake up.

This is also the only biome in the world where mineshafts are forbidden, and there are no trial chambers here either, so the city has the whole depth to itself.

How to Find

Sculk spreads deep underground and an ancient city sits in the middle of it, so let the /locate biome search name the ancient city in that sculk before you go anywhere near it:

/locate biome minecraft:deep_dark

Sculk changes nothing about the rules: this search requires cheats to be enabled for the world that sculk spreads through, or operator permissions on a server, though the sculk this command sends you into hears every step you use long before anything sees you.
