Frozen Ocean

The Frozen Ocean biome is an uncommon biome that takes a little searching to find, generated in the Overworld dimension and classed as an ocean biome. Its climate is freezing, so water turns to ice and rainfall falls as snow, so the Frozen Ocean gets snowfall rather than rain. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 0 and the biome ID minecraft:frozen_ocean.

Its defining terrain features are frozen surface water, icebergs, blue ice and deep water below ice. Ocean surface is frozen with large icebergs containing blue ice. Blue ice is the fastest block for ice boat travel. Polar bears spawn on icebergs.

The Frozen Ocean biome was added to Minecraft in 1.7.2 and is still generated in version 1.21. Like all Overworld biomes it is shaped by the surrounding temperature and humidity, so the exact borders of any Frozen Ocean you find will shift from world to world.

The Frozen Ocean biome only generates in the Overworld. It commonly borders Snowy Plains, Snowy Beach and Deep Frozen Ocean, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.

Sail into cold waters until the surface turns to ice studded with tall icebergs.

If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:frozen_ocean”, which points you to the nearest Frozen Ocean and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Frozen Ocean on foot: because it is uncommon, ordinary travel through the Overworld will usually reveal one before long.

On the peaceful side, the Frozen Ocean biome is home to Rabbit, Squid and Salmon. The Rabbit, for example, drops rabbit hide, raw rabbit and occasionally a rabbit's foot. Together they make the Frozen Ocean a useful place to gather food, leather and a catch of fish.

On the dangerous side of the Frozen Ocean biome, watch for Polar Bear, Drowned and Stray. The Polar Bear is passive but defends its cubs aggressively if you stray too close, while the Drowned is an underwater zombie that can wield a trident and drops nautilus shells.

The blocks that give the Frozen Ocean biome its character include Ice, Packed Ice and Blue Ice. Within the Frozen Ocean, Ice, Packed Ice and Blue Ice are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.

The Frozen Ocean biome can generate Ocean Ruins, sunken stone structures with buried-treasure maps and loot chests and a Shipwreck, a sunken vessel whose chests can hold treasure maps, supplies and emeralds.

With Ocean Ruins and Shipwreck all able to appear in the Frozen Ocean biome, it is well worth exploring thoroughly, as each of these 2 structures offers its own loot and challenges.
