Nether Wastes

The original and most common Nether biome. Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants generate here. Nether quartz and gold ore are abundant.
Overview
The Nether Wastes biome is a common biome you will run into often, generated in the Nether dimension and classed as a nether biome. Its climate is scorching (the Nether is uniformly hot, so water evaporates instantly), so the Nether Wastes gets no precipitation at all and stays permanently dry. In technical terms the game tracks it with a temperature value of 2 and the biome ID minecraft:nether_wastes.
Its defining terrain features are netherrack terrain, lava seas, glowstone clusters and nether quartz ore. The original and most common Nether biome. Nether Fortresses and Bastion Remnants generate here. Nether quartz and gold ore are abundant.
The Nether Wastes biome was added to Minecraft in Alpha 1.2.0 and is still generated in version 1.21. As a Nether biome the Nether Wastes has no day/night cycle, no weather and a permanent lava-lit gloom.
Where to find it
The Nether Wastes biome generates in the Nether, so you must build and light a Nether portal to reach it. It commonly borders Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, Soul Sand Valley and Basalt Deltas, so finding any of those is a good sign you are close.
It is the default Nether terrain, reached through any Nether portal; expect endless netherrack and lava.
If cheats or operator permissions are available, the fastest method is the command “/locate biome minecraft:nether_wastes”, which points you to the nearest Nether Wastes and gives its coordinates. Without commands you have to explore for the Nether Wastes on foot: because it is common, ordinary travel through Nether will usually reveal one before long.
Mobs
On the peaceful side, the Nether Wastes biome is home to Strider. The Strider, for example, walks on lava and can be saddled and steered with a warped fungus on a stick.
On the dangerous side of the Nether Wastes biome, watch for Zombified Piglin, Enderman, Piglin, Ghast and Magma Cube. The Zombified Piglin ignores players until one is struck, then the whole pack swarms, while the Enderman teleports, picks up blocks and turns hostile if you look directly at its head.
Blocks & resources
The blocks that give the Nether Wastes biome its character include Netherrack, Glowstone, Nether Quartz Ore, Nether Gold Ore, Soul Sand and Gravel. Within the Nether Wastes, Netherrack, Glowstone, Nether Quartz Ore and Nether Gold Ore are the most useful to gather early, whether for building, crafting or decoration.
In terms of mining, nether quartz ore and nether gold ore are abundant; ancient debris hides in the deep layers.
Structures & features
The Nether Wastes biome can generate a Nether Fortress, the only place blazes spawn and the source of nether wart for brewing and a Bastion Remnant, a ruined piglin stronghold packed with gold blocks, piglins and the rare Pigstep music disc.
With Nether Fortress and Bastion Remnant all able to appear in the Nether Wastes biome, it is well worth exploring thoroughly, as each of these 2 structures offers its own loot and challenges.
