Snowy Plains

Snowy Plains biome in Minecraft
CommonoverworldCold

A vast snowy flatland. Snow villages and igloos generate here. Some igloos have hidden basements with brewing stands.

Overview

White to the horizon. Snowy plains is the default cold flatland: snow layers over snow blocks, frozen lakes in the dips, and a spruce tree standing on its own now and then.

Villages get built out here in snow and spruce, and igloos, which generate in only three biomes, sit on the flat. Some of them hide a basement under the carpet with a brewing stand, a zombie villager and the golden apple to cure it. Rabbits, polar bears and strays are the animals; world generation only rolls animals into 7% of it, so the emptiness is by design.

Zero on the temperature scale is a freezing climate, and against 0.5 humidity that means snowfall where a milder biome would get rain, and rainfall is something this flatland never sees. minecraft:snowy_plains is common, goes back to Alpha 1.2.0, and 1.21 still spreads it across every cold quarter of a world.

Where to find it

The default cold flatland of the Overworld. Snowy Taiga, Ice Spikes, Frozen River and Frozen Ocean all border it.

Look for vast, flat snowfields; this is the default cold flatland and the most common cold biome.

Common, and the largest cold biome by area, so any push north puts you in one. Igloos and villages both generate on it, and strays take over from ordinary skeletons after dark. No portal is needed, and exploration northward does the work: cold tends to arrive first as thin snow, then as a field of it.

Mobs

Rabbits dominate this snow: 91 percent of every animal spawn attempt, two or three at a time, and the ones born here come out white. Polar bears take the other 9 percent, one or two at once, and a bear is passive right up to the moment you walk near its cubs, which it defends without any further warning.

The stray is the hostile on the list, about 1 in 6 attempts and four at a time. It is the frozen version of the skeleton and its arrows carry Slowness, so the fight moves at whatever speed it decides.

Snowy plains is also one of 5 biomes with its own animal chance at world generation: 7%. That number is why the surface can look empty for a long walk and then hold a dozen rabbits at once. The quiet residents are rabbits: the rabbit, for example, drops hide, raw rabbit and a rabbit's foot if you are lucky. Watch for polar bears and strays, because the bear is passive but defends its cubs aggressively if you stray too close, while the stray fires Slowness-tipped arrows. Counted per attempt, stray is a sixth of the hostile spawns, and behind it polar bear 1 in 11.

Blocks & resources

Snow Block, Snow and Ice, three blocks and no fourth. Snow layers pile up as it falls, Snow Block is what you get when you pack them, and the frozen ponds hand over Ice by the sheet.

The spruces are scattered and small, so bring empty slots for wood from its trees but do not count on filling them here. The igloos are the real find on this ground, and everything else is white.

Structures & features

Three builds share this snow, which is more than most biomes manage. An igloo is the smallest: a snow shelter that looks like one room until you find the trapdoor, and the basement laboratory under it holds a captured villager and the zombie villager you are meant to cure. Igloos reach three biomes here and no others.

A village on snowy plains comes with villagers, their farms, their beds and an iron golem on patrol, and its building palette matches the cold wood and stone around it. Six biomes here can grow one.

The third is a pillager outpost, one of twelve in this list that raise one: pillagers on watch, a captain among them, and a banner that hands you the Bad Omen effect when he drops. Below all three, the world ignores biome edges as it always does, so mineshaft tunnels below the frost, dungeon rooms opening off them and, rarely, a stronghold are still under the snow. The igloo is small and sometimes hides more than it shows, the village is a trading community, and the watchtower is guarded by a captain whose banner triggers Bad Omen. Exploring all three offers loot and challenges, which reaches further than most snow ever offers. Each of these three is able to appear on the same flat snow, and they are thoroughly well spread across a world, which makes the walk worth it.

The cold group's colours, #80B497 grass under a #8AABFF sky, shared with nine other pages. No music of its own. The number that sets it apart is the animal chance: 7 percent when the world is drawn, against 10 nearly everywhere else, which is one reason the snow looks so empty before you build on it.

Terrain Features

  • -flat snowy terrain
  • -scattered spruce trees
  • -frozen lakes
  • -igloos

What generates per chunk

Trees run at 0.1 per chunk, so one chunk in ten gets a single spruce, twice the plains rate and still almost nothing. Forty six passes in total, two fewer than the plains, and the missing ones are the flower and grass passes: nothing is planted on the snow at all.

Spawn rules and animal variants

This is the full winter package: rabbits spawn white here, foxes spawn in their snow coat, farm animals take the cold form and any tadpole becomes a cold frog.

The polar bears and the rabbits are what you will actually meet, and the biome is on the stronghold preference list as well.

Structure depths and forced spawns

The igloo is the smallest home in the game and the snowy plains is one of only three biomes that generate one, alongside the snowy taiga and the snowy slopes.

A snowy village and an outpost can also stand here, both starting at ground level and running up to eighty blocks from their first piece, with the chambers far below in the -40 to -20 band.

How to Find

Flat snow stretches further than it looks, and igloos, villages and pillager outposts all generate in it, so let the /locate biome search hand you the igloo, village or pillager outpost waiting in that snow:

/locate biome minecraft:snowy_plains

Flat snow requires cheats to be enabled in the save the flat snow lies in, or operator permissions on a server, plus the command counts frozen lakes as part of the same biome you use it for.
