Soul Sand Valley

A haunting biome with blue soul fire and massive basalt pillars. Ghasts spawn at very high rates. Fossils made of bone blocks dot the landscape. Soul speed enchantment helps traverse soul sand.
Overview
Blue fire over a floor of soul sand and soul soil, basalt pillars standing in it, and skeletons walking out of the haze. Bone block fossils lie half buried, and ash hangs in the air.
Ghasts spawn here at rates no other biome comes close to, which makes crossing it loud and expensive. Soul sand slows you to a crawl unless your boots carry Soul Speed, soul soil under a fire gives you the blue flame, and this is the only biome in the game that generates soul sand as terrain.
Temperature 2, humidity 0, and the Nether climate that goes with it: uniformly scorching, permanently without nightfall or weather, lava for light, and water that evaporates instantly. minecraft:soul_sand_valley arrived with the Nether update in 1.16, and 1.21 still runs it under the fortresses.
Where to find it
A Nether canyon, so the portal comes first. Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest and Basalt Deltas are what it opens out of.
Look for an open Nether canyon of soul sand and soul soil lit by blue soul fire and ribbed with basalt pillars.
Common, and you hear it before you see it. Soul sand drags at every step, skeletons shoot across the open ground, and blue fire lights the bone blocks running through the walls. Obsidian and flint and steel before anything else, as with any trip down. Being open ground, it will reveal itself from a long way off, and travel across it is commonly the fastest route between those ordinary red biomes, with the blue light visible soon enough to plan around.
Mobs
Three mobs, and ghasts own the sky. They take 70 percent of a monster spawn attempt in groups of four, floating over the soul sand and firing explosive fireballs that you can deflect straight back into them.
Skeletons hold 28 percent in groups of five, which is more skeletons per group than anywhere else in the game. They fire arrows and would burn in sunlight if the Nether had any, so the bones and arrows pile up faster here than in any Overworld cave.
Endermen round it off at roughly 1.4 percent, teleporting between the basalt pillars, picking up blocks and turning hostile the moment you look at one directly. No animal is listed for the valley at all, which is why the sound of a ghast carries so far across it. The numbers behind that put the skeleton at 28% of the hostile spawns, five at a time. Nothing here is friendly: a skeleton fires arrows and burns in sunlight unless sheltered, which in the Nether means never, and the enderman teleports, picks up blocks and turns on you the moment you look at its head. Ghasts take 71% of the same count.
Blocks & resources
Soul Sand and Soul Soil are the floor, Soul Fire burns blue on top of them, Basalt stands in pillars out of it and Bone Block makes the ribs of the fossils. Soul Sand is the only one of the five that no other biome on this site generates.
The two soul blocks are not interchangeable. Soul sand slows you down and pulls you under water, soul soil does neither, and only soul sand grows nether wart, so it is the block a brewing stand ultimately depends on. Both will hold a soul torch and a soul campfire, which is what keeps piglins away from a door.
The valley lays its own soul sand in as veins on top of the ground it already has, so the floor is not one flat sheet but layers of it, and the fossils are buried in the same passes rather than placed on the surface.
The air here carries its own drifting particles and it has an ambient sound of its own, both of which arrive before you can see the far wall.
Before you build, it is worth knowing which of the two you actually want to break: soul sand is the one to carry, soul soil is the one to use for a floor, because nothing sinks into it.
Soul Fire on the ground with a basalt pillar standing over it is the picture people take of this valley.
Structures & features
Blue fire, bone, and two structures worth the trip. A nether fortress can span this valley, and it stays the one place where blazes spawn, as well as the source of the nether wart that brewing runs on; five biomes here generate one.
The bastion remnant is the wealthier stop, present in four of these biomes: a ruined piglin stronghold packed with gold blocks, held by piglins, with a rare music disc, Pigstep, among the loot.
The valley adds a third thing that is not a building at all. Bone block fossils lie in the soul sand and soul soil in numbers no other part of the Nether matches, and basalt pillars stand between them. It costs nothing to mine, unlike everything else down here. The fossil generation here is tied to bone rather than to loot and turns up nowhere else in such numbers, while exploring the fortress and the bastion offers the challenges instead. Both structures are able to appear in that same valley, and each is thoroughly worth the blue light it costs to find.
Biome Colors
The fog is #1B4745, a green that belongs to this biome alone, and ash drifts through it on 0.6 percent of ticks, far thinner than the deltas but constant. A loop and a five minute mood sound run underneath its own music. This is one of two biomes that caps its own crowd: endermen, ghasts, skeletons and striders all draw on a shared budget, so the valley never fills the way the wastes do.
Terrain Features
- -soul sand and soul soil terrain
- -soul fire
- -basalt pillars
- -bone block fossils
What generates per chunk
Seventeen passes, the shortest list of the four Nether biomes. Basalt pillars get 10 tries per chunk, soul sand its own ore pass at 12, and crimson roots 96 tries, all three of them unique to this biome. The rest is the shared Nether ore list, and there is no fungus pass at all, which is why the canyon stays open.
Spawn rules and animal variants
Warm classification, empty of anything it applies to: the soul sand valley is on the warm farm animal and warm frog lists, and the only mob our own spawn list gives it is the enderman.
It is the clearest case in the Nether of a rule written for animals that never arrive.
Structure depths and forced spawns
The nether fossil generates in this valley and in no other biome in the world, and it is placed in the same step as the fortresses rather than as a surface decoration.
A bastion can start at thirty three blocks above zero here as well, and a fortress brings its own five mob spawn list inside its walls.

How to Find
Soul sand, soul fire and basalt pillars make a corridor through the Nether rather than a destination, so run the /locate biome command in that same dimension, and the soul fire and basalt pillars follow:
Soul sand requires cheats to be enabled in the save the soul fire burns in, or operator permissions on a server, though it slows every step you take once the command has done its work.
